WEEKLY NEWS AND UPDATES
The third week of the 2020 Session has concluded, and I wanted to take a moment to update you on the latest news from Richmond.
This Monday, January 20th, an unprecedented gathering of 22,000 gun rights activists assembled to protest the infringement of our 2nd Amendment rights, as well as to lobby against gun control measures introduced in the House and Senate.
Despite rhetoric to the contrary, Monday’s demonstrators proved that gun owners are responsible and respectful, even taking care to clean up the area at the end of their event.
As always, I invite you to visit anytime you’d like. My office is in room W437 of the Pocahontas Building. I ask that you call my Legislative Aide, Travis Smiley, at (804) 698-1120 to make sure I’m in the office. I look to forward to seeing you all.
AID TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT
This week I spoke to the House Appropriations Committee in defense of my budget amendment to HB30. My amendment calls for the state to allocate additional money from the General Fund to localities with police departments. Recruiting, training, and retaining skilled police officers is a crucial function of law enforcement, and my budget amendment simply asks the state to live up to the agreement it made to aid localities with funding. Localities do a great job supporting police departments, and additional funding from the state level will help ensure our men and women in blue can continue their great work upholding the laws of our Commonwealth. You can watch my brief testimony here.
LEGISLATION
HB1590: Local regulation of air cannons. Allows localities to require a special exception or special use permit for the use of certain devices, including air cannons, carbide cannons, or other loud explosive devices that are designed to produce high-intensity sound percussions for the purpose of repelling birds.
